Former presidential candidate of 2023 Presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) Omoyele Sowore has advised leadership of NLC and TUC to reject the N60,000 minimum wage being proposed by the federal and state governments.
Human rights activist, Sowore said N60,000 as minimum wage is slavery to workers. He argued that with high cost of food in the market and general economic hardship faced by workers, Nigerian workers N60,000 is not a living wage.
Omoyele added that the time had come for Nigerian workers to demand nothing short of a living wage.
Sowore said, “I am urging the leadership of the labour unions – Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) not to back down; they MUST reject the N60k slave wage being proposed by the Tinubu regime. The time for Nigerian workers’ total struggle for a living wage is now!”

On his part, former Kaduna Central senator, Shehu Sani said the statement from Nigeria Governors’ Forum regarding the N60,000 minimum wage was shocking. He said governors’ stance that they cannot pay N60,000 if approved by the federal government is not welcomed.
Senator Sani said if Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki could pay N70,000 as minimum wage to the state civil servants other state governors should learn from him.
“The Governors’ opposition to 60k as minimum wage in spite of the unprecedented increase in Federal allocation is shocking,” Shehu said.
He asked, “Where is Edo State getting its money to confidently raise the minimum wage to 70k?”
