Okezie Ikpeazu calls on govt to invest in bitter kola research

Former Governor of Abia State, Okezie Ikpeazu, has called on government to invest in Bitter Kola research.

The former governor of Abia, whom audit report alleged funds diversion in his administration, said investment in bitter kola would help in maximizing the benefits of bitter kola.

Ikpeazu, a professional Biochemist, said citizens’ health, digestive and respiratory diseases could be addressed through bitter kola.

“As a biochemist, it is crucial to investigate the health benefits of plants. Let’s examine a plant called Garcinia kola, commonly known as bitter kola, is a traditional medicinal plant with numerous health benefits. It has been widely used in African traditional medicine for its potent therapeutic properties. Research and traditional uses highlight its potential in addressing various health issues,” he said.

Ikpeazu said bitter kola’s bioactive compounds would help reduce inflammation, “which can alleviate symptoms of conditions like arthritis and other inflammatory diseases.

“Bitter kola helps neutralize free radicals, protecting the body from oxidative stress and cellular damage, which is essential for preventing chronic diseases and promoting overall health.

He added that Garcinia Kola could help in diabetes management. “Studies suggest that bitter kola may help regulate blood sugar levels and enhance insulin sensitivity, making it beneficial for managing diabetes.”

Ikpeazu said with bitter kola, respiratory conditions like asthma and bronchitis would be treated. He said bitter kola improves lung function by expanding the alveolar ducts and sacs.

“Bitter kola is traditionally used to treat respiratory conditions such as asthma and bronchitis. It helps improve lung function by expanding the alveolar ducts and sacs. The plant aids in digestion and helps alleviate gastrointestinal issues like constipation and diarrhea,” he added.

Ikpeazu said, “Investing in biochemical and pharmacological research on Garcinia kola could unlock more of its medicinal potential. Modern scientific methods could help identify and isolate the active compounds responsible for its therapeutic effects. This could lead to the development of new drugs and treatments for a variety of health conditions. Collaborative efforts between traditional healers and modern scientists can also ensure that the knowledge and benefits of bitter kola are maximized and safely integrated into modern medicine.

Bitter kola holds significant promise for improving human health due to its diverse medicinal properties. Enhanced research and investment in this plant could lead to innovative solutions for managing and treating various health issues, from diabetes and respiratory conditions to microbial infections and inflammation. Proper scientific validation and understanding of its mechanisms can further solidify its role in modern healthcare.”
