Ndigbo are insulting me after supporting Obi- Okupe

Doyin Okupe, former Director-General of Obi-Datti presidential campaign council, has said he never expected Igbo people would insult him after his support for Peter Obi in the 2023 presidential election.

Doyin Okupe, former Special Adviser to former president, Olusegun Obasanjo, said 80 percent of people who “insult, abuse, disparage” him and “are intolerant” of his views are people from South East.

Okupe said he supported Peter Obi because he was a Southerner and not that he was better than Tinubu, and his desire for a Southerner to take over power from former president, Muhammadu Buhari.

He said that he supported Obi and did not help him to win the last general election would not be the reason for him to pull President Tinubu down.

“I supported Obi based only on the principle that a southerner, must succeed Buhari. Sadly we lost the election. God in His wisdom gave victory to another Southerner. A yoruba and a long-standing associate. If I did not help him to win should I join others to pull him down unjustifiably?

“Is it a coincidence that nearly 80% of those who insult, abuse, disparage and are intolerant of my views on this platform are from one ethnic nationality? Wow! I have been a nationalist all my life and politics. Freely, I went out of my way on principle to support the SE quest for Presidency,” Okupe added.

The former Senior Special Adviser on Public Affairs to former president, Goodluck Jonathan said no amount of insult from Peter Obi supporters would make him kill friendships he established over time.

“No matter the insult, intolerance and display of uncouthness, I will remain what I have always been. A true nationalist. We have invested too much in each other to go back on commitment to brotherhood and national unity. This new wave of bigotry will not undo the friendship already established,” he added.

Reacting to Okupe’s complaint of being insulted by South East people because of his support for Tinubu, Reno Omokri, a former aide to Jonathan, said the South East would go out to insult anyone that has contrary view on Peter Obi.

He told Okupe to “please take heart”. Reno said the South East people and Peter Obi also insulted Professor Wole Soyinka who went to jail for his support for their Biafra agitation during civil war.

Reno’s tweet on X, reposted by Doyin, read: “Please take heart. Not all of them are like that. They did the same to me. But look at it this way. Professor Wole Soyinka went to prison for twenty two months because of his advocacy for the Igbo people during the Nigerian Civil War. Today, many of those same people he suffered imprisonment for are insulting him, and Peter Obi even went to Arise TV recently to insult the only Nigerian Nobel Laureate personally.

“If they can treat Soyinka that way, at least be comforted that you are not in bad company.”
