“Today (June 4), as always, I remember Alhaja (Mrs) Kudirat Abiola, the wife of Bashorun MKO Abiola, on the 28th anniversary of her assassination. Following the incarceration of MKO, his wife stepped into the fray to symbolize the struggle for democracy and the restoration of the June 12 mandate.
“Her activism and leadership marked her as a heroine of all time. The democracy we enjoy today was only made possible by the sacrifices of people like her, who paid the ultimate price. May her soul continue to rest in eternal peace,” Atiku mourned.
Under the administration of Late General Sani Abacha, Kudirat Abiola was assassinated on June 4, 1996; while driving in Lagos. Her struggle for democracy rose after the annulment of her husband’s victory, by Military President, Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida in the 1993 presidential election. His husband’s incarceration was, however, what put her in an outer struggle for her husband’s mandate to be restored and open democratic struggle.
