Amid the celebration that greeted the appointment of Finidi George as head coach, the former international will serve as Super Eagles for just one year.

A former Ajax player and former Super Eagles winger was unveiled as the new coach of Nigeria’s male top team on Monday, May 13, to breach the gap between the exit of Jose Peseiro who led the team to clinch the silver medal at the 2022 CAF tournament.

Reacting his announcement, the former Enyimba International head coach said it was an honour to be unveiled as the head coach of the Super Eagles. “Honored to have been unveiled as Head Coach of Super Eagles,” Finidi George wrote on his X handle.

He further expressed gratitude to “the Ministry of Sports Development, and Nigerians for the faith.”

Finidi admitted that “the task is enormous but with the support of Nigerians, we will scale every hurdle and bring glory to our fatherland”, especially as the Super Eagles are preparing for qualifying matches for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Will the new Super Eagles head coach fulfill the “enormous task” with the one year contract he signed with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to manage the Super Eagles amid high expectations from the million fans of Nigerians?

Osasu Obayiuwana, sports journalist described the one year as a joke. While the terms of the contract were yet to be made open to the press, Osusu who disclosed the contract year term said it was not enough for the former Super Eagles winger to make the needed effect.
