Edo guber: Labour Party candidate, Akpata demands free, fair election

Ahead of Edo State 2024 gubernatorial election, Labour Party candidate, Olumide Akpata has called for transparent, free and fair election and level playing ground for all party candidates.

 

Akpata said democracy should not be about casting ballots but transparent process that would encourage active participation of the citizens.

 

The former National President of Nigeria Bar Association said the 25 years democracy celebrated on Wednesday, June 12, was a product of transparent election held on June 12, 1993.

Akpata said democracy remained the bedrock of any society as it allows the people’s voices to be heard, but only through free and fair elections. He said democracy allows o”ur people’s voices to be heard through free and fair elections. Democracy is the bedrock of any society, empowering the people to choose their leaders and hold them accountable.”

 

He added “Yet true democracy is more than just casting a ballot. It requires active participation, civic engagement and a commitment to upholding the rule of law and respecting the will of the majority. A vibrant democracy demands transparency and ensures equal opportunities for all citizens, regardless of background.”

 

The Labour Party candidate for the 21 September gubernatorial election called on Edo citizens to “rededicate ourselves to strengthening our democratic institutions and building a brighter, more prosperous future for Edo State and Nigeria. The power lies in our hands; it is time to make our voices heard.”
