Honourable Uchenna Okonkwo, member representing Idemili North and South Federal Constituency, has announced a food palliative for his constituents, but at the cost of voter’s card.
Hon Okonkwo, Labour Party, legislator, said the Food Bank Initiative would help to reduce effects of fuel subsidy removal on the constituents. “This part of innovation programme is part of a comprehensive effort to alleviate the adverse effects of fuel subsidy removal and combat hunger within the constituency.”
Uchenna added that the food palliative programme would provide a “monthly supply of essential food items to vulnerable households in the elderly, widows and disabled” in Idemili North and South.
While the eligibility is for the applicants to be constituents of Idemili North and South, from 70 years and above, a widow and a disabled; the applicants must present their voter’s card.

“To register to the Food Bank Initiative, eligible individuals must present their valid voter’s card to the organization officer at Hon Uchenna Harris Okonkwo Idemili North and South constituency office at Ogidi respectively for authentication and confirmation purposes,” a statement from Uchenna read on Wednesday, May 15.
While the Labour Party first-time legislator said the voter’s card requirement would ensure”that the programme reaches those who need it most,” an inquiry by our reporter if the national identification card would not serve the same purpose of the voter’s card is yet to be responded.
Our reporter made a check on Nigeria’s voter’s Card and the National Identification Card if they contained residency, local government and state information needed to ensure the Food Bank Initiative programmes reach “those who need it most”. Check showed that the National ID and Voter’s Card contain the information the Idemili North and South constituency representative needs to reach the elders, widows and disabled in his constituency. Our reporter found out that both Voter’s Card and National ID could be used for identification of applicants, except Hon Uchenna considers political interest ahead of the 2027 general election.
