Amid NIN sale for N100, Dele Alake cries impersonation

Nigeria Minister of Solid Mineral, Dele Alake, has raised alarm that an individual used his details to open WhatsApp.

Dele Alake’s alarm comes as Paradigm Initiative (PIN) said data of Nigerians are being sold for N100 by a website now taken down.

Gbenga Sesan, Executive Director of PIN had said while speaking News Central, that the implication of the data breach could result in scammers buying National Identity Number (NIN) of Nigerians to use and register a phone number.

While the Solid Mineral Minister has not attributed the Whatsapp to his data being leaked, it would be recalled that Gbenga said PIN bought the NIN of the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani and Dr. Vincent Olatunji, the boss of  Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC).

“The problem is not Nigerians because we were able to confirm that what they were selling is NIMC’s data and we have proof. We got the NIN slip of the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani. We got the NIN slip of the number one data regulator in Nigeria, Dr. Vincent Olatunji. We bought them for N100 each to demonstrate that this is not a joke,” Gbenga said.

On his X (formerly Twitter) Dele said, “There is an individual using the phone number +234 707 743 7582 on WhatsApp, pretending to be me. Please, be aware that this person is a fraudster and has no affiliation with me, my team, or anyone in my office.”

He advised Nigerians to avoid conducting business with the imposter. He disclosed that he has engaged with authorities to apprehend the imposter.

“I urge everyone to ignore any communication from this impostor. We are currently working with the authorities to identify this individual and ensure that they face the consequences of their actions,” he added.
